چکیده

Introduction: We report a theoretical study of Electron Capture Dissociation (or ECD) in a Penning trap and a novel bench top instrument for ECD. ECD is recognized as a useful technique for peptide/protein analysis because it provides adiabatically cleaved fragment information (C and Z fragments) that are difficult to obtain by widely used methods such as Collision Induced Dissociation and Infra-Red Multi-Photon Dissociation. ECD has been performed in a Fourier Transform-Ion Cyclotron Mass Spectrometer (or FT-ICR). It is, however, not widely used because the instruments are expensive and large compared to ion trap mass spectrometers and TOF mass spectrometers widely used. In this paper we propose a novel alternative for ECD.

An ion trap storage/time-of-flight mass spectrometer

An ion trap/time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer combination has been developed in order to combine the storage capabilities of an ion trap with the speed and resolution of a time-of-flight device. The ion trap is an rf quadrupole trap which operates in the total storage mode, i.e., with the dc voltage=0 on the end caps and rf voltage on the ring electrode. The trap has an ion storage time of...

Ion trap/ion mobility/quadrupole/time-of-flight mass spectrometry for peptide mixture analysis.

An ion trap/ion mobility/quadrupole/time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been developed for the analysis of peptide mixtures. In this approach, a mixture of peptides is electrosprayed into the gas phase. The mixture of ions that is created is accumulated in an ion trap and periodically injected into a drift tube where ions separate according to differences in gas-phase ion mobilities. Upon exit...

EUROPEAN ORGANISATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH Ramsey Technique Applied in a Penning Trap Mass Spectrometer

The Ramsey method has been applied in an experiment aiming for accurate mass determination of unstable isotopes. The ion motion in a Penning trap has been excited with time-separated oscillatory elds and Ramsey fringes were observed in the case of dipole and quadrupole excitation. The experimental resonances are in good agreement with theory. Further applications of the technique are discussed....

Peptide and protein sequence analysis by electron transfer dissociation mass spectrometry.

Peptide sequence analysis using a combination of gas-phase ion/ion chemistry and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is demonstrated. Singly charged anthracene anions transfer an electron to multiply protonated peptides in a radio frequency quadrupole linear ion trap (QLT) and induce fragmentation of the peptide backbone along pathways that are analogous to those observed in electron capture disso...

Collision-induced dissociation pathways of yeast sphingolipids and their molecular profiling in total lipid extracts: a study by quadrupole TOF and linear ion trap-orbitrap mass spectrometry.

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae synthesizes three classes of sphingolipids: inositolphosphoceramides (IPCs), mannosyl-inositolphosphoceramides (MIPCs), and mannosyl-diinositolphosphoceramides (M(IP)2C). Tandem mass spectrometry of their molecular anions on a hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight (QqTOF) instrument produced fragments of inositol-containing head groups, which were specific for each...
